The Supervision Relationship

The relationship between supervisor and supervisee is the foundation for the work that will occur in supervision. Supervision is an educational process, in which the essential elements of the supervisor-supervisee relationship include establishing trust and a safe environment, encouraging self-disclosure, identifying transference and counter-transference, examining diversity issues, and establishing appropriate boundaries.

The goals of supervision

The goals of supervision are fourfold:

  • To promote supervisee growth and development;
  1. To protect the welfare of the client;
  2. To monitor supervisee performance and act as a gatekeeper for the profession;
  3. To empower the supervisee to self-supervise and carry out these goals as an independent professional.
