Models of Supervision

The Person-Centered Model


In this model the supervisor assumes that the supervisee has immense resources for both personal and professional development and the supervisor is not viewed as the expert who does all the teaching. Supervision occurs in a collaborative manner and the responsibility of supervision is shared among the supervisor and supervisee. This form of supervision effectively models the mutual relationship between the therapist and client as well. It is my job to provide an atmosphere where growth can take place. This atmosphere is developed by promoting a genuine and empathetic relationship. As a person-centered supervisor, I accept the supervisee as a person in a process and trust the supervisee’s potential for growth.

The Cognitive-Behavioral Model


This model is structured, focused, and educational. You and I are both responsible for the structure and the content of the sessions. You will learn both from the content of the supervision and from my modeling cognitive-behavioral techniques. Modeling takes place through the use of listening, gathering information, supporting, managing, giving feedback, summarizing, checking theoretical knowledge, challenging, educating, using experiential learning, self-disclosing, disagreeing, utilizing video observation, and other activities.


The Solution-Oriented Model


This model is grounded in the assumption that people are healthy, resourceful, and competent and have the ability to find solutions that can enhance their lives. In solution-oriented supervision, the basic assumption is that the supervisee is the expert and have the resources to problem solve clinical situations. This is achieved by building a conceptual map which includes a discussion of what you want from supervision, the supervisory relationship, and assumptions about solution-focused supervision. Additionally, implementation of solution-oriented supervision includes setting goals and monitoring progress toward those goals. You are assumed to be capable and resourceful when it comes to achieving supervision goals. Supervision focuses on affirming and empowering you to learn and grow in supervision.
